Belgium boosts its support for Morocco’s sovereignty over Sahara
RABAT - Belgium continues with determination to reinforce its support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, taking decisive steps that seal its definitive position on this issue, reported Moroccan daily Al Ahdath Al Maghribia on Thursday.
Brussels has chosen to strengthen its partnership with Morocco by overcoming this obstacle, to build a stronger and broader strategic cooperation, wrote the daily.
This direction, initiated by the Belgian Foreign Minister’s visit last January and his support for the autonomy plan, finds new confirmation in his recent declaration to Parliament. The Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Maxime Prévot, adopted a clear stance, stressing that Belgium will now act diplomatically and economically based on its new position regarding the Sahara.
Prévot specified that the Belgian Consulate General in Rabat carries out its mission throughout the Kingdom without regional discrimination, granting Belgians registered in the Sahara region the same consular services as those in other provinces.
The top Belgian diplomat invited the Belgian ambassador in Rabat to visit the Moroccan Sahara as Brussels seeks to explore investment opportunities in Morocco’s southern provinces.
Prévot announced preparations for a government visit to Morocco next spring, aimed at implementing the political agreement signed in October 2025. He is expected to organize a high-level state visit, including royal presence, on the occasion of celebrating bilateral relations.
This official stance comes after many voices within the Belgian Parliament called for Brussels to formally join the list of European Union countries supporting Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara, notes Al Ahdath Al Maghribia. Belgium’s alignment with this position is seen as a strong symbol, confirming that the EU has definitively chosen full support.
