Bouteflika sacks two Major Generals

Wheelchair-bound Algerian President dismisses Said Bey, Habib Chentouf, in charge of first and second military regions respectively.

LONDON – Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika dismissed Major Generals Said Bey, head of the first military region, and Habib Chentouf, head of the second military region, reported the Algerian media.

General Meftah Sawab, in charge of the sixth military region, will replace Bey while General Ali Sidane, who heads the Cherchell Military Academy, has will succeed Chentouf, according to Reuters.

Last June, wheelchair-bound Bouteflika dismissed his powerful police chief, General Abdelghani Hamel and the chief of the gendarmerie, Menad Nouba.

Ailing Bouteflika has rarely appeared in public since suffering a stroke in 2013. The veteran leader, in office since 1999, has not said yet whether he will stand for a fifth term
