Deputy FM: Russia ready to help out with US-Iran talks
MOSCOW - Russia is ready to help out with talks between the United States and Iran over their ongoing military conflict, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov was quoted as saying by TASS state news agency on Wednesday.
"Russia is ready to provide all possible assistance in resolving this conflict, and the parties involved are well aware of this," Ryabkov said.
With standard diplomatic channels between the US and Iran effectively deadlocked under the pressure of harsh rhetoric and unyielding ultimatums, Russia is positioning itself as a potential backchannel capable of bridging the gap.
Kremlin analysts note that Russia holds unique diplomatic leverage in this scenario. Moscow has maintained deep geopolitical and military ties with Tehran, while simultaneously keeping lines of communication open with Western powers and backchannel intermediaries. By stepping into a mediation role, Russia aims to assert its influence as a global power broker capable of navigating complex Middle Eastern security architectures.
However, the efficacy of Russian mediation remains to be seen. The US has previously expressed deep skepticism toward Moscow's interventions in the region. Furthermore, with the current U.S. administration demanding what it frames as an absolute victory and total Iranian compliance, finding common ground will require navigating immense political obstacles.
