Egypt returned subsidies for 1.8 million since February

Supply ministry says Egypt has returned 1.8 million people to its food staples subsidy programme since February following earlier cuts.

CAIRO - Egypt has returned 1.8 million people to its food staples subsidy programme since February following earlier cuts, the supply ministry said on Tuesday.

The statement follows a tweet by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Sunday in which he said he understood the negative impact of subsidy cuts for some citizens.

The programme provides subsidised goods to more than 60 million out of Egypt's population of nearly 100 million.
