EU commits $102 million to support Sudanese communities

The projects are expected to benefit more than 500,000 people.

KHARTOUM –

The European Union (EU) announced on Thursday a $102 million (EUR 95 million) package of aid to support communities in Sudan affected by displacement and conflict, aiming to improve livelihoods and protection across multiple regions.

The initiative, implemented by the World Food Programme (WFP), Danish Refugee Council, and CARE Netherlands, targets Khartoum, Gedaref, Kassala, Red Sea, Northern State, Central and South Darfur, White Nile, River Nile and North and South Kordofan. The projects are expected to benefit more than 500,000 people.

Key components include vocational training and small business start-up kits for young people, cash assistance for vulnerable households, school feeding programmes, and essential protection services, including safe spaces and shelters for at-risk populations. Support for micro and small enterprises is also planned, alongside strengthened social safety nets and referral pathways to improve integration and protection.

Ambassador Wolfram Vetter, the EU’s Head of Delegation to Sudan, said the funding “underscores the EU's commitment to supporting the resilience of the Sudanese population, prioritising the essential needs of vulnerable groups displaced by the armed conflict with a strong focus on children and young people, women and girls.”

“By working alongside our partners with a long track record in Sudan, we are proposing practical solutions to enhance economic and educational opportunities while strengthening community resilience,” he added.

The four-year programme aims to address pressing challenges such as unemployment, food insecurity and educational disparities, while improving living conditions for children, women, young people and individuals with disabilities through community engagement and empowerment.

The EU, a political and economic union of 27 countries, provides global humanitarian and development assistance, with a focus on promoting peace, stability and prosperity.
