Four PJD members get prison terms for 1993 student murder

Court of Appeal in Fez sentences Taoufik El Kadi and Abdelouahed Akerioul to three years in prison for complicity in murder of leftist student Benaissa Ait El Jid while Aajil Abdelkabir and Kassim Kabir were sentenced to three months in prison on charges of "stab wounds."

RABAT - Moroccan court sentenced Monday four members of the ruling Islamist party of Justice and Development (PJD) for the murder of a leftist student in 1993.

The Court of Appeal in Fez sentenced Taoufik El Kadi and Abdelouahed Akerioul to three years in prison for complicity in the murder of Benaissa Ait El Jid while Aajil Abdelkabir and Kassim Kabir were sentenced to three months in prison on charges of "stab wounds."

Ait El Jid was killed during clashes between leftist and Islamist students at Dar El Mehraz University in Fez 26 years ago.

Ait El Jid’s family and his lawyer criticised the “light” sentences against the four PJD members, adding that they did not reflect the horror of the murder.

The four men had previously been acquitted before the case was reopened.

The trial of Abdelali Hamieddine, a leading PJD member, for "complicity in murder", is taking place today after the revelations made four months ago by El Khammar Haddioui, the only eyewitness to Ait El Jid’s murder.
