France dismantles cannabis trafficking network

French police arrest three suspects, seize almost 1.3 tons of cannabis resin in Montpellier with help of Moroccan, Spanish authorities.

RABAT – French police dismantled Tuesday an alleged network of cannabis trafficking between Morocco and France following a lengthy investigation in cooperation with Moroccan and Spanish authorities.

After more than ten months of investigations, the investigators of the SRPJ Montpellier (Herault) managed to dismantle an alleged network of cannabis trafficking between Morocco and France.

“1,278 kg of cannabis resin were seized and three suspects aged between 29 and 32 years brought before a judge on Tuesday at the end of the investigation,” said Christophe Barret, prosecutor of Montpellier.

In March 2018, the police obtained information that a traffic of narcotics that was intended to feed the region of Montpellier acted between Morocco and France.

Assisted by the Moroccan and Spanish authorities, the police then identified several trips of drug shipments between the two countries via Spain.

The value of the seized drugs has been estimated at more than 5 million euros.

“The probe will have to define who could have benefited from this traffic,” said Jean-Philippe Fougereau, director of the SRPJ Montpellier.
