Morocco’s press body slams Algeria’s Echourouk channel

National Press Council condemns violation of press ethics, professional conduct by Algerian channel Echourouk which aired a satirical show that attacks Moroccan people and King.

RABAT - The National Press Council (CNP) condemned on Saturday the violation of the press ethics and professional conduct by the Algerian channel "Echourouk" which aired a satirical show that clearly attacks the Moroccan people and King Mohammed VI.

In a statement, the CNP said it "followed the reactions to the broadcast of a satirical show by the Algerian channel Echourouk which clearly attacks the Moroccan people and His Majesty the King using a language of denigration and of degradation of dignity, and which is a far cry from the satirical shows broadcast by civilized channels that merely comment and criticize without insulting, degrading the personal image or harming people."

This show "used expressions offensive to the person of His Majesty the King and scornful of the Moroccan people, while clearly calling for war. These are so many flagrant violations of ethics and professional conduct of the press," the CNP said.

It also "attacked all Jews, a practice that is banned by the laws of the world which do not tolerate any discrimination between people on the basis of their ethnicity or religion," the statement added.

The CNP stressed its strong condemnation of "the media bias expressed by this show, while cautioning against fuelling animosity and hatred between peoples," which goes against the noble mission of the press.

The Council also called on the press and media in Morocco to refrain from any similar reaction, to preserve respect for the press ethics and professional conduct as well as objectivity and integrity. It also called for working towards the consecration of the spirit of brotherhood between the two peoples of Morocco and Algeria.

The CNP also urged journalists and the media in Algeria to distance themselves from anything that may harm the relations of brotherhood and friendship between the two peoples and to banish and reject all those who aim at creating a climate of tension and confrontation and stirring up feelings of hatred and violence.
