Morocco suspends air travel with UK over new virus

Morocco says it will ban air travel with UK starting Sunday night, citing fears of new coronavirus strain.

RABAT - Morocco said it will suspend air travel with the UK starting Sunday night, citing fears of a new coronavirus strain.

The new strain could be up to 70% more infectious, the United Kingdom has said, prompting its European neighbours and several other countries to close their doors to travellers from the country.

Much is unknown about the strain, but experts said current vaccines should still be effective against it. No Asian country has reported the new strain.

Moroccan carrier Royal Air Maroc announced the suspension, until further notice, of all its flights to and from Great Britain.

“Passengers holding tickets on these flights can benefit from a free change of date or destination in Europe, or a refund of their ticket,” the airline said in a statement.

Morocco had allowed some flights to resume linking tourist hubs Agadir and Marrakech with London, in a bid to save its hard-hit tourism sector.

On Sunday, Morocco reported a total of 417,125 coronavirus infections, including 6957 deaths and 32,014 active cases.
