Moroccan tip-off helps Spain seize over 1.6 tonnes of cannabis resin
MADRID – Spain’s Guards Civil (Civil Guards) seized on Sunday 1.61 tonnes of cannabis resin which was transported on a speedboat west of Fuerteventura, the second largest Canary Island following a tip-off from the Moroccan Directorate General of Territorial Surveillance (DGST).
The boat, without name or registration and carrying “46 bundles” of drugs, was halted after a chase on the Playa de los Mozos, it was detailed.
Research continues to “identify the traffickers involved in this operation as well as their accomplices,” said a Moroccan security source.
Spanish police have announced in recent months that they had seized around forty tonnes of cannabis resin aboard “drug-sailing boats” transporting the drugs for criminal organizations in Eastern Europe.
“These major operations carried out against drug trafficking by sea were made possible thanks to Moroccan cooperation,” the Spanish authorities said in a press release.
