Methanol poisoning kills 8 people in Morocco

Eight people died and 81 others are under medical supervision after consuming bootleg alcohol adulterated with methanol in the town of Sidi Allal Tazi as authorities investigate the incident.

RABAT - Eight people died and 81 others are under medical supervision after consuming bootleg alcohol adulterated with methanol in the town of Sidi Allal Tazi north of Rabat, the health ministry said on Wednesday.

The deaths were all registered at a hospital between Tuesday and Wednesday, the ministry said in a statement, as authorities investigate the incident.

A resident of Souk El Had, not far from Sidi Allal Tazi, blamed the deaths for a type of alcohol that he called “Spiritus” taken from beetroot

“Young people mix alcohol and beetroot produced by a neighboring factory with lemonade before consuming the resulting liquor, and the price of the bottle does not exceed 20 dirhams,” Hicham told le360.
