Morocco’s police probing 12 policemen for criminal acts

24 individuals are suspected of involvement in bribery, influence peddling, and complicity in the smuggling of foreign goods and commodities through the Tangier City Port.

RABAT - Morocco’s National Brigade of Judicial Police (BNPJ) launched Thursday a judicial investigation under the supervision of the competent Public Prosecutor's Office to verify criminal acts attributed to 24 suspects, among which are six police officers, six employees of a local unit of the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST), and two customs officials.

They are suspected of involvement in bribery (abstaining from performing professional duties for the purpose of corruption), influence peddling, and complicity in the smuggling of foreign goods and commodities.

The DGST had provided precise intelligence regarding the suspected involvement of certain employees in violating control procedures for the transit of goods and commodities through the Tangier City Port. These individuals allegedly exploited their influence to intervene on behalf of others to bypass customs inspections in exchange for financial commissions and bribes.

The investigations and inquiries conducted so far have led to the identification of several individuals who allegedly benefited from this collusion to circumvent customs procedures. The employees suspected of involvement in these violations and criminal acts have been identified.

By order of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, all suspects have been subjected to judicial investigation procedures to determine the extent and scope of their involvement in the crimes committed. Inquiries continue to uncover all contributors, participants, and beneficiaries of these recorded criminal acts.
