UKMTO warns Strait of Hormuz threat level remains critical

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations all commercial vessels and shipping operators transiting the area to exercise extreme caution and maintain heightened vigilance.

DUBAI - The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations said on Monday, on behalf of the Joint Maritime Information Centre, that the maritime security threat level in the Strait of Hormuz remains critical due to ongoing regional military operations.

UKMTO said mariners are advised to coordinate with Omani authorities via VHF channel 16 and should consider routing via Oman territorial waters south of the traffic separation scheme, where the US has established an enhanced security area.

UKMTO urged all commercial vessels and shipping operators transiting the area to exercise extreme caution and maintain heightened vigilance. The warning highlights the ongoing risks posed by potential missile, drone, and naval activity linked to the Iran-Gulf conflict that has now entered its eighth week.

“The maritime security threat level in the Strait of Hormuz remains critical due to ongoing regional military operations,” the statement read.

Persistent Risks to Global Shipping

The Strait of Hormuz, the world’s most important energy chokepoint responsible for roughly one-fifth of global oil consumption, has been at the centre of heightened tensions since Iran began its campaign of attacks on Gulf targets on February 28. Iran has repeatedly threatened to close or disrupt the strait, raising fears of major interruptions to energy supplies and international trade.

Despite recent diplomatic efforts, including reported discussions on a potential 45-day ceasefire, the UKMTO assessment indicates that the situation on the water remains highly volatile. Military activity, including aerial threats and naval posturing, continues to pose serious risks to merchant shipping.
