Kallas: EU could decide on sanctions against violent West Bank settlers
BRUSSELS - EU countries could reach an agreement on sanctions against violent settlers in the West Bank on Monday, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said before a meeting of the bloc's ministers of foreign affairs.
"I am hopeful we'll get there," Kallas said, adding it was still not entirely clear the required unanimity would be found for the proposals.
The proposed sanctions target individuals and groups involved in violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank. The move comes amid growing international concern over rising settler violence and its impact on regional stability and prospects for peace.
Several EU countries have been pushing for targeted sanctions for months, arguing that concrete action is needed to deter extremist settler groups. Previous attempts to secure unanimous support have faced resistance from some member states wary of straining relations with Israel.
Kallas stressed the importance of sending a strong signal against violence while maintaining the EU’s balanced approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
