UAE condemns Sunday attack at UN Security Council

UAE Ambassador Abushahab warns Sunday’s attack constitutes a dangerous escalation in an already volatile regional environment.

NEW YORK - United Arab Emirates Ambassador Mohamed Abushahab warned on Tuesday that a recent strike targeting the country represents a severe threat to Middle Eastern stability in a sharply worded address to an emergency session of the UN Security Council.

Ambassador Abushahab told the council that Sunday’s attack constitutes a “dangerous escalation in an already volatile regional environment,” emphasizing that the strike was a direct attempt to undermine the UAE’s sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity.

An Emergency Session Amid Mounting Peril

The emergency meeting was convened following Sunday's military strike, which shook an already fragile region currently grappling with severe supply chain disruptions, energy corridor blockades, and an ongoing conflict involving major regional powers.

Addressing the chamber, Abushahab stressed that the UAE would not tolerate violations of its borders or threats to its citizens. By bringing the matter directly to the UN Security Council, the UAE is seeking a unified international stance against the perpetrators and looking to fortify its defensive and diplomatic positions.

Sovereignty Under Threat

"The strike sought to undermine the UAE's sovereignty, security and territorial integrity," Abushahab stated, signaling that the attack crossed a critical red line.

While the ambassador did not publicly name the specific actors behind Sunday's assault during his initial remarks, the implications were clear to the council: the incident threatens to pull previously unaffected areas of the Arabian Peninsula deeper into the broader regional crossfire.

Diplomats in New York noted that an attack on the UAE carries profound economic and geopolitical consequences. As a global hub for aviation, maritime trade, and financial services, any prolonged threat to the UAE’s stability could trigger immediate shocks in international markets, which are already under duress from the 11-week-old maritime crisis in the Persian Gulf.

The UAE delegation urged the Security Council to take decisive measures to deter further hostile actions, arguing that passivity from the international community would only embolden actors seeking to plunge the region into an unmanageable, wider conflict.
