The anti-terrorist operation was the fruit of the collaboration between Spanish, American, Austrian and Moroccan intelligence services.

One of the jihadists was imprisoned after his arrest in Mataró, Barcelona while the second was arrested in Austria following an arrest warrant issued by the Spanish National Court.

Both had military training and combat experience since joining Al-Qaeda-affiliated groups in Syria in 2014, Spanish security services said.

One of the detainees had lived in Spain before moving to a conflict zone in 2014, while the other left Morocco the following year. The latter had never lived in Spain, but a large part of his family has lived there for seven years.
