US ambassador to Tripoli hails Morocco’s role in Libya

Norland says Washington is 'very grateful' for Morocco's 'useful' role in supporting the political process in Libya.

RABAT - US ambassador and special envoy for Libya Richard Norland hailed Monday Morocco’s role in supporting the political process in Libya.

"The role that Morocco plays in the region to support the political process in Libya is very useful" and the United States of America is "very grateful", he told the press after talks with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita.

The US diplomat described his discussion with Bourita as "very useful", which covered "several topics, including the question of the upcoming elections in Libya, scheduled for December".

"Now is the time to establish the constitutional and legal basis for these elections to take place in December," Norland added.

The head of the Libyan transitional government Abdelhamid Dbeibah visited last June Morocco which has been playing a continuous role in supporting Libyans’ efforts to prepare for the upcoming elections in December that will help Libya have a durable political stability.

"The provision of all the conditions for the success of the elections scheduled for December 24 will allow the Libyans to enjoy stability, to put an end to the foreign presence and to achieve development," said Bourita in a statement to the press after his talks with Dbeibah in Rabat.
