Moroccan police foil attempt to traffic almost 6 tonnes of chira

Police arrest two suspects near the city of Moulay Bousselham on suspicion of links to a criminal network involved in international drug and psychotropic trafficking.

RABAT - Moroccan police foiled an attempt to traffic 5,758 tonnes of chira near the city of Moulay Bousselham on Thursday, according to the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN).

Two individuals have been arrested on suspicion of links to a criminal network involved in international drug and psychotropic trafficking. The operation, which led to their capture, was conducted by Tangier police in close coordination with the General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (DGST).

The first suspect was apprehended red-handed while attempting to traffic drugs internationally in a foreign-registered truck, according to the source. During the search, authorities seized 140 bundles of chira.

The investigation also led to the identification of a woman for her alleged involvement in the same case. She was subsequently arrested during a separate operation in Kenitra.

The two suspects have been placed in police custody under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor's office, in order to investigate the potential links in this case and identify the potential accomplices involved.

This security operation is part of the ongoing efforts of the DGSN and DGST in the fight against international drug and psychotropic trafficking, the source concludes in a statement.
