UN Security Council lifts sanctions on Syria's president

The US-drafted resolution also lifts sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister Anas Khattab.

UNITED NATIONS - The United Nations Security Council removed sanctions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, who is due to meet US President Donald Trump at the White House on Monday.

The US-drafted resolution on Thursday also lifted sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister Anas Khattab. It received 14 votes in favor, while China abstained.

The resolution came as US President Donald Trump plans to meet with Sharaa at the White House on Monday.

Trump has sought good relations with al-Sharaa. In June he revoked most US sanctions against Syria, and Trump met with the Syrian leader when he visited Saudi Arabia last May.
